Ian Mortimore-Jackson raises £1,715.00 for Cardiology

75 year old Perrigo employee Ian Mortimore-Jackson raised £1,715.00  for the North Devon District Hospital Cardiology Department.  Ian said “My wife Valerie received treatment at North Devon District Hospital and I wanted to do something to support the cardiology team that treated her.  I started singing lessons last year and my teacher Katie Kerslake asked me to sing at a pub event at the Kings Arms in Georgeham at the beginning of July.  I sang ‘I want to break free’ by Queen dressed as Freddie Mercury which went down so well Katie persuaded me to sing at Braunton Recreation Park in July   I’ve only sung in public 3 times but this performance is the biggest audience so far. I was determined to raise as much money as I could for the Cardiology Team and I am delighted.”

Over and Above hospital charity fundraiser Julie Whitton said “Ian’s fundraising will mean that we can purchase extra equipment for the cardiology unit, which will be a great support to the team.

Line-up announced for NHS70 family fun day at NDDH

Plans to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS and raise money for Over and Above with a family fun day at North Devon District Hospital are coming together, with the help of the local musical community.

The event will take place on Sunday 1 July 2018 from 10am-4pm and will be packed full of activities, with plenty of fun for all ages.

Local acts for the entertainment stage have been confirmed and will include the likes of amazing acoustic indie pop artist Sam Dowden, who is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter.

The day will start in style with the rock ‘n’ roll classics of Elvis from Brockabilly.

In true community spirit, a number of local choirs will also be lending their voices to the celebrations – DyNaMix and the Rhythm of Life choirs.

NDDH staff will also be putting on a dancing demonstration – look out for the cowboy hats!

The young stars from Stagecoach Stage School will end the day on a high, which will include a special performance of their charity single ‘Little Star’. The song was written in memory of Keira Ball, who was a Stagecoach student herself before she passed away. The single was released to give Keira’s fellow students the chance to say goodbye and to raise awareness of organ donation. Keira’s organs have saved the lives of many people after her family agreed to donate her organs.

Ian Roome, head of fundraising and volunteering, said: “We’re really excited about our line up for the entertainment stage, which is packed from start to finish. I would like to thank all the acts, who are giving their time for free in support of the hospital charity.

“Our plans for the day are really coming together and I can’t wait to share more details with you in the run up to the event.

There is much more planned for the charity fun day, including food and drink from local suppliers, kids’ activities, tours of the hospital, a time capsule and stalls from local sellers and organisations.

Local organisations and sellers can still apply to have a stall at the event, with a proportion of any profits going to Over and Above, in support of the Cancer and Wellbeing Centre Appeal. If you would like to have a stall, please contact ndht.charity@nhs.net by Friday 15 June 2018, or ring 01271 311772.

It will be free to attend and park at the event, although donations to the charity will be very welcome.

Ian added: “Come along to celebrate 70 years of the NHS and have fun, whilst also supporting the Trust charity – we’ll see you there!”

Celebrate 70 years of the NHS at NDDH family fun day

The NHS is turning 70 this year, and to celebrate, Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is holding a family fun day at North Devon District Hospital. The event will take place on Sunday 1 July 2018 from 10am-4pm.

The day will be packed full of activities, with plenty of fun for all ages, including tours of the hospital, demonstrations, an entertainment stage with live music and dancing, food and drink from local suppliers, and kids’ activities.

Local organisations and sellers are invited to have a stall at the event, with a proportion of any profits going to the Trust charity, Over and Above, in support of the Cancer and Wellbeing Centre Appeal.

Ian Roome, head of fundraising and volunteering at the Trust, said: “The NHS has supported us all in some way over the last 70 years, and this event is about getting everybody together to recognise the fantastic work of our NHS here in northern Devon.

“We hope to see members of staff, both past and present, their families and friends, and the community coming together to celebrate and have fun, whilst also supporting the Trust charity.”

It will be free to attend and park at the event, although donations to the charity will be very welcome.

Tours will include a tour of the Tarka radio station, a tour behind the scenes of NDDH, a teddy bear tour for children – bring a teddy along and see what teddy gets up to when needing a trip to hospital – and more.

There will also be the chance to get creative and contribute to our time capsule – come along and write or draw your message on our giant scroll, which will be placed in the foundations of the new North Devon Cancer and Wellbeing Centre.

Town Clerk faces his worst Fear!

Barnstaple Town Clerk Will Austin is completing a 15,000ft Tandem Skydive at Dunkerswell in aid of the Over and Above Cancer and Wellbeing Centre Appeal. The Appeal is hoping to raise £1.5m to build a centre for cancer patients and their loved ones. The centre will be a dedicated space available to anyone affected by cancer and other illnesses, offering a wide range of information and support services, all within a comfortable environment. The centre will also provide a relatives accommodation wing. Whilst patients are being treated in hospital and relatives want to be close by, they will be able to book one of the three en-suite family sized bedrooms.

Will Austin, Town Clerk said, “I am absolutely terrified of heights and this is going to get my adrenaline pumping. The staff here at the council put my name forward and are helping me with fundraising for this very worthwhile charity appeal.”

Ian Roome, Head of Fundraising and Volunteering at the charity said ” We are immensely grateful to Will for his bravery in taking up this challenge as I know he is especially scared of heights. We want to encourage others to do this challenge for us and they can actually do it most days of the year.”

Do you want to help Will and do the challenge with him? If so the date is Saturday 14th July at Dunkerwell Airfield near Honiton, Devon. Contact Over and Above on ndht.charity@nhs.net or phone 01271 311772
