Take part in this years Big Brew

JOIN IN the Hospital Charity’s BIG BREW event on Friday 20 February to support our local hospital wards and departments.

BIG BREW is a perfect way to start the weekend and to beat the winter months by selling your colleagues and friends a slice of cake and a cup of tea or two in aid of the hospital charity and the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal.

The event takes place on Friday 20th February but if this date doesn’t suit you, just choose a day that does.

Anyone can take part – why not organise one yourself for family, friends and work colleagues, or hold one for your local community to join in.  Just sell coffee, tea and cake, and perhaps hold a raffle with those unopened boxes of chocolates left over from Christmas.

The money you raise will go to the hospital charity “Over and above” and will help local people being treated at local hospitals in North Devon with their treatment and care over and above what the NHS can provide.  Your money could raise funds for anythincupg from helping to fund our major project, the “North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal”, or to assist other Departments such as a special piece of equipment that would be helpful in the children’s Caroline Thorpe Ward.

Poorly children at North Devon District Hospital have day brightened by visit from panto cast

Three panto stars visited the Caroline Thorpe ward at the hospital.

The stars of Jack and the Beanstalk, which is on at The Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple, visited the Caroline Thorpe ward on Monday.

Charlie Vose (Jack), Brian Weston (squire) and Andrea Lynette-Young (Fairy Blossom) all donned their outfits and stopped off at the hospital to talk with the children.panto

Brian, who helped deliver presents on the ward last year, said: “It’s great to be back in North Devon, back in panto at the Queen’s Theatre and also to be returning to the Children’s Ward at North Devon District Hospital to bring a little bit of Christmas magic to the poorly children.

“I know myself and the others have been really looking forward to the visit and also want to thank the staff on the ward there who work so hard to make these children better.”

Kemal Tas’ daughter was on the ward during the visit, after suffering feeding problems. When the panto cast visited he was there with his other daughter, two-and-a-half year old Selina Tas, who played with the cast.

Kemal, from South Molton, said it was a nice surprise for his daughters. “This unit has a lot of poorly children so it is nice to have this visit at Christmas time,” he added.

Jan Braund, senior staff nurse on the ward, was working on Christmas Day and said everyone tried to make it as Christmassy as they could for the children. “I work on Christmas Day every other year,” she said. “We try and make it as best we can for the children and their parents. We try to discharge as many children as we can but the more poorly children have to stay in.

“Father Christmas came to visit and Christmas dinner was served and we tried to make it as Christmassy as possible under the circumstances.”

Accountants and Business Advisors jubilant at Chemotherapy Appeal cycle success

A team of accountants and business advisors completed a 200-mile weekend cycle challenge to raise money for the Chemotherapy Appeal.

Members of staff from Maynard Johns in Bideford, led by company director Edward Johns, and members of the Bideford & Barnstaple Round Table set off from Bideford Quay on Friday, September 26, and headedOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA for Land’s End, before returning and finishing at Hartland Quay two days later.

The team, which also includes Jason Cox, Peter Quincy, Caroline Bramwell, Oliver Keates, Paul Jarrett and Barnstaple Round Table chairman Darrel Gill, raised an amazing total of £4546.50. This was officially presented at a special event on Saturday 29th November in Bideford.

Edward, 40, was inspired to set up the challenge by his sister Jane Maynard, a fellow partner at the company, who used the chemotherapy unit two years ago.

“My sister had the misfortune of needing to use the facility a couple of years ago and we’re very happy that she’s fully recovered and back working with us,” he said.

“Her main comment coming out was ‘there’s not enough space’ and obviously the new unit will help – to do a little bit to help towards it makes us feel very proud,” he added.

Ian Roome, Fundraising Manager said” This is a significant amount of money to raise and our charity is really grateful to everyone who put a tremendous effort into the event to raise such a fantastic amount of money.”
